    Thu 17 Mar 2022

Well done to all of our fantastic pupils who participated in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade today in Downpatrick, hosted by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council. Our pupils represented their school excellently in showcasing a float based on the Irish mythological saga, The Cattle Raid of Cooley. The float was decorated with beautiful artwork and the pupils equipped with Celtic inspired costumes and props. Thanks to our school staff who joined the children, especially Mr Lyttle for organising our school’s involvement in this year’s parade. A special thanks to Philip Campbell from Down Community Arts who worked so hard to coordinate such a successful event! We hope our children and families enjoy the remainder of the long weekend!

  • ๐Ÿšง๐ŸŒณ Phase 2 of Outdoor Development Completed ๐Ÿšง๐ŸŒณ

    Tue 15 Mar 2022

We are delighted to announce the completion of Phase 2 of our Outdoor Learning Environment, which saw further development of our Pond and Nature Area. This area of our school is now home to a Wildlife Pond, complete with aquatic plants, fish, a filtration system, water feature and a sensory pergola shelter. There is an observation bridge with binoculars and a periscope, for pupils to observe the wildlife that will inhabit the area. Around the Pond and Nature Area, there are a number of newly installed educational displays, providing information about the seasons, as well as different plants, animals and native tree species.

Each class has also been provided with their very own planter box, which they can use to grow their own produce and plants and to further their learning in Science and World Around Us. I’m sure you will agree this area looks terrific and will undoubtedly be a fantastic learning resource for the pupils of St. Colmcille’s to enjoy and benefit from for years to come.

We look forward to the imminent commencement of Phase 3 of our Outdoor Developments, which will include the planting of the area with flowers, trees and wild grasses and the installation of an Outdoor Fitness Equipment and shed. A special thanks to Mr Lawrence Blaney, father of Aiden and Dale, who has on numerous occasions freely given of his time and talents to enhance this area of the school grounds.

The children were enthralled to watch a 3D planet show ‘Perfect Little Planet’ in which they followed a family of friendly aliens on a quest to find the perfect planet. The pupils then visited the Planets of the Solar System, The Moon, The Sun and finished their dome experience with a thrilling space rollercoaster! Everyone then took part in a rocket workshop, working together in groups to assemble a rocket and then went outside to blast the rockets into the sky! Everyone had a fantastic day of hands on learning and fun!

  • ๐Ÿค St. Colmcilleโ€™s PTFA Donate to School ๐Ÿค

    Fri 11 Mar 2022

We are very appreciative to our wonderful PTFA who have very recently donated £1500 to school. This money has been used to enhance our playground equipment and signage. Items purchased include footballs, hoops, playground signage, tennis racquets, hockey sticks and goal posts.

Educational research clearly shows that when children experience enjoyable playtimes and are appropriately stimulated, they perform much better within the classroom environment. Thank you to the PTFA for their continuous hard work in fundraising for this important playground equipment and to parents for supporting the school at all opportunities.
