Listen to the Future!

St Colmcille's celebrated World Children's Day on Wednesday! The theme this year was 'Listen to the Future.' We encouraged children to use their voices on the global issue of climate change. By listening to children we can fulfil their right to self-expression, understand their ideas for a better world and include their priorities in our actions today! Each class learnt about the causes of climate change and how climate change is negatively impacting the lives of children all around the world. They then took part in protest rallies to voice their concerns and demand that our local government and world leaders take action to save and protect our planet and the lives of all children globally! Article 24 & 12 of the UNCRC, All children have the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously. children and young people have the right to the best health possible

This week in school we celebrated World Children's Day which commemorates the 1989 adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, (UNCRC). World Children's Day is a day by children for children. Our Rights Reps created this very informative video for World Children's Day to help us reflect on how children experience Rights around the world and how children's Rights are being negatively impacted by current world events. They also introduce us to the Sustainable Development Goals, (Global Goals), which aim to end extreme poverty and improve our world by 2030. Our Rights Reps also provide us with some useful advice on how we can help achieve the Global Goals.

As a silver award Rights Respecting school we are celebrating World Children's Day to continue to raise awareness of children's rights and to help fight for the rights of children all around the world!

Sunday 20th November 2022 marked the 33rd birthday of children's rights! On 20th November 1989 world leaders signed and adopted the Convention on the Rights of a Child, (CRC.) The CRC has improved the lives of children, but there is still work to be done! We are celebrating World Children's Day to continue to raise awareness of children's rights and to help fight for the rights of children all around the world! As a Rights Respecting School we are aiming to help create an inclusive world in which all children enjoy their rights and have equal opportunities to grow, develop and thrive to their full potential. It is important that the voices and opinions of all children are heard, valued and listened to.
