Reinforcing our mental maths work on adding using the petals, flowers, plants and other items at the daily mile area.
We have moved on to look at measuring weight using scales. On the iPad we used a number of activities to explore which items are heavier or lighter than others as well as using the post office scales to look at the weight of the items in grams. We will move onto using kilograms as well as using real life scales to look at the weight of everyday items.
We have been working extremely hard on our adding over the last number of weeks. Today we looked at bridging and how to check our mental calculations using a written method.
To continue our work on measuring we used the cubes to estimate the length of objects before checking them.
Using a ruler to measure items in the classroom to the nearest cm.
Building 3D shapes using nets. We had to build a range of shapes and then look at new words like faces, vertices and edges.
Using our online ruler to measure a range of everyday items to the nearest cm before progressing to the nearest half cm.
Problem solving using ordinal numbers. Pupils had to get in order to solve the problems of tallest to smallest, youngest to oldest and by house numbers.
Matching up numbers with how they are spelt using the pairs game.
We have been working very hard on our mental maths and adding by counting on. We used games like snakes and ladders addition to work on our adding in a fun and enjoyable way.
For Maths week we completed a range of activities such as addition bingo, flip questions, adding petals on flowers as well as looking at 3D shapes. The pupils enjoyed the range of activities and really worked hard on improving their mental maths skills.
Exploring shapes through the use of Spheros.
Using the IZAK9 cubes, we had to solve problems related to the properties of 2D shapes. The pupils had to work together to make the 2D shapes and then discuss the properties of each.
To continue our work on odd and even numbers, we created odd and even monsters to help us sort out the numbers. If the numbers were odd we placed them beside the odd monster and then if the numbers were even we placed them beside the even monster.
Over the last number of lessons we have been exploring patterns and using our find a pattern problem solving strategy to help us. The pupils had to look at the colours, shapes and items to work out what came next or what was missing from the pattern.
Our problem solving work looked at how we can find and make patterns to solve the problem being asked as well as using our investigating skills to explore patterns to find the mistakes before fixing them.
Our task today focussed on finding the place value of numbers. Each group had numbers to look at and find the tens and units with some groups progressing to hundreds and thousands. Once the place value was found, we had to throw the ball into the correct box to show if it was a unit, ten, hundred or thousand.
Our 2D shape hunt took us all around the school to identify and discuss all about the shapes we found. We looked at their properties focussing on sides and corners.
We used different activities to look at how we could use ordering, sequencing and number bonds to solve a range of number problems.
We worked on our place value and number sequences today. In our groups we had to sequence numbers to 10, 20 and 50 in ascending and descending order. We then had to look at a sequence and find what number or numbers were missing.
