Literacy

Week beginning 3rd February. This week our sound of the week is ue words. Pupils have enjoyed playing interactive games to explore which letter combinations make this sound.

4/2/25 WALT read for pleasure. We were very fortunate to have a visit from author Tim Bailie to mark National Story Week. He read ‘The Proud Parakeet’ to the boys and girls, a great take about a parrot who was too proud and learnt the error of his ways. Tim highlighted the importance of reading stories and writing your own too. A lovely morning was had by all!

4/2/25 WALT listen to others and share ideas. Pupils really enjoyed watching ‘The Windmill Farmer’ on Literacy Shed. They discussed ideas, themes and character motivation using the strategy of ‘Think, Pair, Share.’ They will now describe the setting of the story using similes, ambitious adjectives and alliteration.

3/2/25 WALT spell words that contain prefixes. P6 pupils enjoyed coming up with words that contain common prefixes. Pupils went on to play games on word wall that tested their prefix knowledge.

28/1/25 WALT record our writing using technology. P6 pupils have enjoyed researching the organs of the human body. Pupils have found out interesting information about different organs and then typed that information into a document, formatted the document and added an image. Pupils have learned about highlighting key parts of texts, positioning text and using images and diagrams effectively.

28/1/25 WALT use inverted commas accurately. P6 pupils are learning to use inverted commas accurately in their sentences. They have been practising the skill using interactive games and quizzes before completing some work in their books.

27/1/25 WALT identify verbs in a sentence. P6 are always revising previously learned concepts and this morning we focussed on verbs. For their morning started activity, pupils identified verbs in sentences and discussed different verbs that could fill the blanks.

WALT spell words with ory/ary/ery endings. P6 pupils practised spelling their sound of the week by playing interactive games on Word Wall.

13/1/25 WALT summarise what we have seen. Pupils are really enjoying our new Literacy Shed video - The Alchemist’s Letter. The pupils worked in pairs to summarise and analyse the key concepts of the video ahead of their work on it over the next few weeks.

17/12/24 WALT retell the story of Christmas. P6 pupils have been learning about the story of Christmas and exploring the themes in the story. They were then challenged to retell the story using Book Creator, including the key parts, images and using their voices to read the story aloud.

25/11/24 WALT spell homophones. P6 pupils have been learning about and revising homophones recently. They put their knowledge to the test using interactive games on the board and on the iPads.

18/11/24 WALT spell and read words that contain the ‘aw’ sound. P6 pupils enjoyed playing board games that challenged them to read and spell the ‘aw’ sound. This will help them in their spelling assessment on Friday!

14/11/24 WALT write an acrostic poem. P6 pupils enjoyed writing acrostic poems on this years anti bullying theme of ‘Choose Respect’.

12/11/24 WALT use alliteration and rhyme in an advertisement. P6 have been working on the video Cyber Kicks, an advertisement for futuristic trainers. The girls and boys have been inspired to write their own adverts and have been challenged to include many features of adverts, such as alliteration and rhyme. They used the app Book Creator to create their ads and did a great job!

4/11/24 - 15/11/24 WALT talk to and inform an audience. P6 pupils have really enjoyed working on their assembly on the theme of anti bullying. The pupils devised and delivered important anti bullying messages to the pupils, staff and parents of St Colmcille’s.

6/11/24 WALT spell words containing the u sound. P6 enjoyed their phonics lessons this week when they made word-searches for their friends containing their spelling words!

18/10 /24 WALT improve our comprehension skills. P6 love guided reading outdoors! Pupils read together and were challenged to summarise and predict what they had read.

17/10/24 WALT see different perspectives. As part of our writing topic, discussion writing, our class prepared to write their own piece on the question ‘Should children have to wear school uniform?’ The pupils put themselves in the shoes of others as they pondered the answer to that question, with each child given a different role. The pupils then enjoyed some drama as they acted out that role, giving some pros and cons to wearing uniform.

16/10/24 WALT use apostrophes for possession. P6 reinforced their learning of singular and plural apostrophes for possession today by taking part in interactive games. They also reviewed their written work, made corrections and completed some self assessment.

14/10/24 WALT use apostrophes for possession. P6 have been learning how to use apostrophes for possession in their writing. They have learned about singular and plural possessive apostrophes and have been playing games and quizzes to put their knowledge to the test!

7/10/24 WALT refine our comprehension skills. P6 pupils continue to work on developing their comprehension skills by reading and answering questions on a variety of different style texts. This week pupils revised retrieval questions.

27/9/24 WALT identify key features of a text. Pupils continued their work on discussion texts this week when they worked together to identify the argument being made and the supporting evidence for that argument. Pupils worked in pairs and discussed which arguments were most convincing and what evidence was most compelling.

25/9/24 WALT develop our inference skills. The boys and girls in P6 have been working together to improve their inference skills by using the short video ‘The Eye of the Storm’ on Literacy Shed. The video has teased the pupils with hints and clues about the plot and character intentions and the pupils have been looking for clues to answer the questions provided to them.

24/9/24 WALT develop our reading skills. The pupils enjoyed using the outdoor classroom to take part in some guided reading this week. The boys and girls are working hard on predicting and summarising as well developing their inference skills.

23/9/24 WALT spell words with the ee sound. The pupils are learning about letters that make the ee sound. They worked in pairs to spell words that contain this sound.

WALT recognise and identify the features of a discussion text. The pupils enjoyed working together to highlight the features of a discussion text. They read ‘Should dogs be on leads in the park?’ and looked for points for and against, technical vocabulary, interesting sentence starters and other features too. This will help the pupils when they come to write their own discussion piece.

WALT spell words with the ‘oa’ sound. The boys and girls enjoyed exploring their sound of the week. They worked in groups to come up with words they knew that contained the ‘oa’ sound. This will help them in their tasks in the week ahead.

WALT create our own characters. P6 pupils really enjoyed Roald Dahl day, a day to celebrate the great children’s novels that he wrote. The pupils participated in a live lesson that taught them some techniques for creating interesting characters. They then got to work with coming up with their own characters, giving them traits and problems to solve. Who knows, maybe we have our very own future author in our class!

WALT build on the ideas of others. P6 enjoyed their first Literacy Shed video ‘The Lighthouse’. They improved their talking and listening skills using the strategy ‘Think, Pair, Share’ where they came up with their own ideas and answers about the video before pairing up. They compared answers and ideas and built on the ideas of their friends. One of the tasks they had to complete was to make a realistic prediction about what might happen in the next scene of the video, something the boys and girls proved excellent at!
