  • ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ“š New Online Reading Scheme- Rising Stars Reading Planet ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ“š

    Sat 29 Jan 2022

St Colmcille’s PS have recently invested in a new Online Reading Scheme Rising Stars Reading Planet. It is an exciting, interactive resource which provides a wide selection of reading eBooks for children from Primary 1 to Primary 7. Each eBook features an audio recording that is synchronised to the text, highlighting each word as it is heard. The eBooks also include checkpoint quizzes and an end-of-book quiz to check children’s comprehension skills. The questions in the end-of-book quizzes are linked to important reading skills such as vocabulary, sequencing and inference.

Reading Planet features a huge range of digital reading books to appeal to the tastes and interests of children who are starting on their reading journey as well as those who are becoming fluent readers. The books include a variety of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and plays, written by experienced educational and children’s writers. All the books have been carefully levelled according to book banding criteria and Lexile measured to ensure steady progression throughout the programme. Each child has their own account and related login details to access reading material. We greatly value the support of our parents in embedding this new scheme both in school and at home!

The Primary 7 children explored the different types of volcanoes and their features before creating their own erupting volcano. Primary 4 explored the role of insulation in keeping animals warm in the Polar regions. Primary 3 loved creating clouds and rain using shaving foam and food colouring. LSC2 and 3 have been learning about Space and created flying rockets using chemical reactions. All of the children were so engaged and loved participating in the workshops.
