WALT: use our mental maths strategy of ‘counting on’ to add

We used the Izack 9 cubes during our problem solving lesson today. Our focus was to find the total of an addition sum by using the mental maths strategy of ‘counting on.’

🤩WALT: identify a sphere and explore through digital art & design 🤩

As part of our work on 3D shapes we were able to link our work on spheres with digital art & design. We used the work of Kandinsky as a stimulus to create our own piece of work by colouring a circle using similar patterns and designs. We then used the ‘Quiver’ app on the iPads, which turned our 2D circle into a 3D sphere. There were definitely some faces of amazement as we watched this happen 🤩

🧮WALT: add using partitioned sets ➕🧮

We have been learning to add using partitioned sets through a variety of fun activities using practical materials. We have also been identifying the biggest number in each set and using our strategy of ‘counting on’ to find the total.

🪺🐣Easter Egg Hunt with a twist 🐣🪺

As part of our Easter celebrations and problem solving for this week, we took part in an Easter Egg Hunt. Ms Vaughan had hidden 10 eggs in our Pirate Ship Area. We had to find each number in the correct order and Ms Vaughan read the challenge on the back. Each challenge asked us to complete an exercise and count within 10. Some examples of challenges were:

6 star jumps

8 bunny hops

hop on 1 foot 7 times

When we returned to class we had a special visit from the Easter Bunny who delivered an Easter Egg for each one of us that had been kindly donated by the PTFA. Thank you so much! 🐰

💯🏫 Celebrating 100 Days of School 🏫💯

🌟WALT: identify the number before and after within 10 🌟

🔵🟪 WALT: recognise the properties of and name 2D shapes 🟪🔵

We have enjoyed learning the names of our focus shapes through various songs and games - squares, rectangles, circles and triangles. As part of our follow tasks to support and consolidate our understanding we took part in a shape hunt, shape sorting, printing, games etc.

🤩 WALT: sort by size - small, medium, large 🤩

Our focus in topic maths this week was sorting by size and using the key vocabulary of small, medium and large. This was took some time as most of us are used to using the terms big and small.  The introduction of the new vocabulary went down well and by the end of the week most of us were able to use the terms independently.  The main activity also provided us with the opportunity of developing our scissor skills. We worked hard to hold our scissors correctly and manipulate the page to cut out straight lines.

🌟WALT: recognise numerals and count sets within 10 🌟

We have been consolidating our understanding and recognition of numbers within 10. Our Continuous Provision has provided opportunities for us to recognise and write numerals in a multi-sensory approach. We have counted sets using compare bears, pom-poms and other loose parts.

🎨WALT: sort by colour 🎨

We have been exploring and naming the colours of the rainbow and using this knowledge to complete activities on sorting by colour.  We have sorted many objects including bears, elephants, links, pegs, pictures etc.  As an extra challenge Miss Vaughan asked us to sort the objects using tweezers and this was a bit tricky!
