💬🛸 WALT: use speech bubbles and take on the role of a character 🛸💬

In this week’s focus text, ‘The Way Back Home’ by Oliver Jeffers, the characters didn’t actually speak to each other but the illustrations provided us with enough information that we were able to imagine what they might say. We carried out a number of activities around the text with the focus of identifying and using speech bubbles, using our imagination to take on the role of a character and continuing to develop our fine motor skills and pencil control. Some of the activities we completed in Literacy Skills this week are:

🌟 Using Talkbuttons to record a conversation between the boy and Martian.

🌟 Completing a speech bubble based on what different alien characters might say.

🌟 Creating a code to direct Sphero Indi to the correct alien after reading the speech bubble on each car.

🌟 Developing our fine motor and pencil control skills by completing writing, cut and stick and play dough activities related to the book.

📖🗣️ WALT: take on the role of character within a familiar text 🗣️📖

During our work on speech bubbles many of us found it difficult to take on that role of a character and imagine what they might say. We used a variety of familiar texts that we have already read or those fairytales that we all know and love, with the ChatterPix app to help us become more confident with this concept. When using the app we had to choose a character within a text and take a picture of them using the iPad. Once we had taken the picture, we then drew a line across their mouth and recorded ourselves saying something the character said within the story. The finished piece was an animated picture of the character saying a line in our voice. We had great fun with this activity and it really helped us understand the concept of imagining what a character might say, which in turn helped us with our work on speech bubbles.

🌖 WALT: identify and use adjectives 🌖

Our story this week was called, ‘The Marvellous Moon Map.’ We used the story to focus on and highlight adjectives/describing words. In groups we completed a talking & listening task where we used describing words to describe the character of the mouse and the setting of the map and room.  We did find thinking of the describing words difficult, but with teamwork and help from Miss Vaughan we were able to think of some good choices! To finish this work we completed an independent activity on adding a describing word to a sentence about the moon. We worked really hard on our sentence writing and using capital letters and full stops.

🤩 WALT: identify rhyming words 🤩

✏️ WALT: identify and write tricky words ✏️

🎃✏️ WALT: use time connectives to sequence pictures in the correct order ✏️🎃

In our writing this week the focus was on sequencing pictures of ‘how to carve a pumpkin.’  We had some experience earlier in the week carrying out the process and Miss Vaughan took some pictures we could use later on.  On Thursday we displayed the pictures on our touch panel and discussed if the pictures were in the right order and how to put them in the right order if they weren’t.  We worked together as a group using our key language - first, next, then and finally.  To complete the task we chose one word each to write on our whiteboards and then put ourselves in the correct order under the pictures using the correct focus word.

🌈🐘WALT: listen and respond to the story of Elmer 🐘🌈

Miss Vaughan read the story of ‘Elmer’ and we spent time exploring the key messages within the story including celebrating our differences and unique qualities.  We explored the various colours of Elmer and worked on developing our fine motor skills and pencil grasp during various carousel activities.

🌟WALT: take turns and name items 🌟

We participated in a fun talking and listening activity this week to help develop our friendships,

understanding of waiting and taking turns, and developing our vocabulary.  We had to close our eyes and choose an item of food, then we had to name the item and discuss what it looked like and if we had tasted it before, after that we looked at our lunch box to see if we could add the item to our list.
