Literacy

WALT investigate examples of narrative texts. P5/6 prepared for writing their own narrative texts by exploring the different kinds we have in our own class library. We discussed the different features of the narratives and the pupils considered their favourite genres and what made them enjoy those particularly books. The pupils then sorted the books into the different genres and reorganised the class library based on the style of the book.

WALT spell words with the f sound. Our sound of the week is f. The boys and girls have explored the different patterns that can make this sound, such as f,ff and ph.

WALT read for research purposes. Pupils are loving our Viking topic. They enjoyed reading information books to gain more knowledge about The Vikings.

WALT speak clearly and coherently to an audience. P5/6 worked extremely hard on their Viking themed Power Projects! The hard work wasn’t over though as they then presented their work to the class, explaining their projects and discussing choices and challenges they over came. They then fielded questions from the audience!

WALT learn our spellings. P5/6 enjoyed using the application Free Form to learn their weekly spellings! They wrote their spellings in weird and wonderful ways using different fonts, pens and writing styles.

WALT spell able/ible words.

WALT develop our desire to read for pleasure. P5/6 thoroughly enjoyed World Book Day. The boys and girls made a huge effort to dress up as a character from a book and enjoyed the many activities completed during the day. The pupils took part in the National Trust quiz and showed a good knowledge of books and football! They enjoyed the BBC live lesson where they studied different genres of books and considered which genre appealed most to them. They also read their favourite book for pleasure, a very fitting way to spend some time on World Book Day!

WALT understand the structures of stories. P5/6 were thrilled to have a visit from the author Charlie Graham. Charlie read three short stories to the boys and girls and shared the process of how he came up with and structured his stories. Charlie also shared his tricky start to school life and his struggles to read in primary school. It was inspiring to hear how Charlie overcame these struggles to become not only a primary school principal but a published writer!

WALT develop our spelling knowledge. To support our spelling work in class, P5/6 pupils have been using fun and interactive games to stretch and challenge our spelling knowledge!

WALT use expanded noun phrases. Using the short film ‘Home Sweet Home’ the boys and girls have been describing the houses in the movie using expanded noun phrases, similes and alliteration.

WALT consume and understand stories delivered in different ways. We loved the visit from the Armagh Ryhmers to celebrate National Story Telling Week. The boys and girls listened to old Irish stories told through music. It was a brilliant morning and a great experience.

WALT understand how characters are presented. P5/6 are loving our class novel ‘The Witches’. They have considered how the witches have been depicted and created a Wanted Poster using this information.

WALT pool our ideas using rainbowing

WALT recognise the features of procedural writing

WALT perform in a play/performance

P5/6 loved our very special author’s visit this week. We were very lucky to have Charlie Graham in reading us his excellent book ‘Missing Monkeys’ and the boys and girls enjoyed asking questions about what makes a good author, getting some invaluable tips to improve their own writing.

WALT spell homophones

WALT sort words with the CH/SH sound

WALT analyse poems and write poetry. P5/6 enjoyed studying Michael Rosen's poem 'On the Move again' before using his style to write their own poems on the theme 'Refuge'.

22/9/23 WALT use rhyme and alliteration in advertisements

WALT understand how rhyme and alliteration are used in advertisements. P5/6 have been looking at advertisements and looking at devices used to hook readers/viewers before trying their hand at some adverts using rhyme and alliteration. I think we may have some future marketers on our hands!

P5/6 pupils have been enjoying our class novel 'The Butterfly Lion' and decided to use the novel as inspiration to decorate our class planter. Keep your eyes peeled for the finished article coming up this week!
