Earth Week

To celebrate Earth Week we created earth collages using recycled paper and card. We added some helpful tips to the posters about how to care for the planet such as recycling, turning off lights when not in use and conserving water.

Chocolate

For our topic of chocolate, we have learnt where chocolate comes from in the world, when it was first made and the process to get from the cocoa tree to the chocolate we eat today. We used our senses of smell, touch and taste to guess different types of chocolate and then completed a survey of the class’ favourite chocolate.

Easter Farm Visit

Scientific Investigation

P5 have been investigating ‘how to mummify an apple’. We studied the Ancient Egyptian mummification process, we followed the steps which the Egyptians took to see how successful their preservation process was. We compared four apples, one which was wrapped up, one which was submerged in salt, one that was both salted and wrapped and finally a control apple which was left in the air to compare. Our results showed that the apple which was in salt and wrapped was preserved the best. We discussed some changes which we would make if we were to repeat the investigation such as using the same amounts of salt and wrapping the apples more tightly.

Power Projects

Over the last week, the children have been working very hard on various projects using their creative, scientific and mathematical skills to portray their learning about Ancient Egypt.

Castle features

Minecraft Education- we have been creating story settings using building skills on Minecraft.

P5 bus Trip December. Despite the windy day, we had a wonderful trip to Newcastle. We looked at some of the local landmarks and the stormy waves before finishing off with a hot chocolate to warm us up.

For World Childrenโ€™s day we have been learning about the United Nationโ€™s Global Goals they wish to reach in 2030. The pupils chose one of the goals to create a poster about using Adobe Create.

P5 had a visit from the fire service this week to tell us all about how to keep ourselves and our homes safe.

WALT: describe how some plants have adapted to life in the rainforest.

Refuge

We have been learning about refuge and finding a safe space. We linked our learning about rainforests and took inspiration from our class novel 'The Explorer' to show how a shelter can be made using everyday items. We then developed our own poems about safe places and finding refuge, inspired by Michael Rosen.

WALT: label the layers of the rainforest.

We worked as teams to create each layer of the rainforest: emergent, canopy, understory and forest floor. We included key plants and animals that are in each layer and considered the climate and how it effects each layer.
