Literacy

WALT: write expanded noun phrases using a stimulus

WALT: sort words into the number of syllables they have

WALT: identify the features of a discussion text

WALT: create a front cover using Roald Dahl as inspiration

The boys and girls took part in a live lesson with The Nerve Centre and used Adobe Express to create a front cover based on James and The Giant Peach. The children used their own name to create the title and then uploaded pictures and were able to remove the background, create shadows and scale other images to make it look like the object is much larger than the rest. The children then created a blurb for the back of their book cover.

WALT: answer 5 Ws about Eye of The Storm

Children watched the video called Eye of the Storm and answered the  questions based on the 5Ws. They used post-it notes to place on the board and compare answers with their class. This was an active and engaging lessons which prompted lots of discussion about the question. The children then created their own questions based on the 5Ws. The children will continue to watch the video next week to compete further work based on the short film.

WALT: segment and blend /igh/ words

WALT: highlight the features of a procedural text

WALT: structure a procedural text and highlight the key features

WALT: write a procedural text through modelled and shared writing

WALT: use alliteration and descriptive language to create a metal menu for the Iron Man

WALT: explore how symbolism is used in The Alchemist’s Letter

The children watched a short story called The Alchemist’s Letter where different objects and images were used to represent a deeper meaning in the story. In order to prepare the children for the lesson we used different objects to help us make connections to that object. There were a wide range of answers being discussed with children sharing stories connected to the objects. This was a great introduction to the work that followed with children really making great insights about the story.

WALT: use expanded vocabulary to describe the father and give evidence to support our answer.

The children continued with The Alchemist’s Letter this week and focused on vocabulary and explanation/evidence of our VIPERS. The children worked in groups and chose appropriate vocabulary to describe the father and using evidence to support their answers. This prompted a wonderful class debate and the children gave various perceptions of the father. After, the children used a thesaurus to look for synonyms for their chosen vocabulary.

WALT: highlight the /u/ sound variations

WALT: plan, create and retell an Irish myth/legend

WALT: spell /s/ words

WALT: highlight the key features of an explanation text

WALT: research the life cycle of a frog to complete an explanation text through modelled writing.

The children researched the life cycle of a frog to help them complete their explanation text. We worked together to put the information into sentences and complete the life cycle. The children were able to take out key information and put it into sentences.

WALT:speak clearly and coherently to an audience.

P6 worked extremely hard on their Viking themed Power Projects! The hard work wasn’t over though as they then presented their work to the class, explaining their projects and discussing choices and challenges they over came. They then answered questions from the audience!

WALT: research information about the Vikings using topic books

The children spent time today reading through Viking topic books to help them further their knowledge. They were able to use the contents, index and glossary pages to help focus their research into the particular areas they wanted. They then selected the information they wanted and took down in note form to summarise the main points they wanted to include in their research.  A great way to discuss key facts about the Vikings while also completing some independent work and study. This was a change from the modern method of using a search engine on an iPad. The children were then able to discuss these facts with children at their table and with the rest of the class.

WALT investigate examples of narrative texts.

P6 prepared for writing their own narrative texts by exploring the different kinds we have in our own class library. We discussed the different features of the narratives and the pupils considered their favourite genres and what made them enjoy those particularly books. The pupils then sorted the books into the different genres and reorganised the class library based on the style of the book.
