National Storytelling Week

National Storytelling Week will take place next week at St Colmcilles. This fantastic annual event is a celebration of the art of storytelling and the power of stories to connect, entertain, and inspire.

Stories teach us about the world, they allow us to step into someone else’s shoes and feel empathy, they help us to relax and escape and they can help develop essential literacy skills.

During this week, people of all ages come together to share and enjoy stories in various forms, from traditional oral tales to modern narratives.

Primary 3A introduced National Storytelling Week today with a class assembly. Their parents were invited along to watch the performance and at the end of the assembly the children enjoyed sharing a story with their family member.

Phonics Work

Lots of great phonics practise is taking place in our class. We have been busy developing our recognition of consonant blends, vowel sounds and building lots of words.

Using Comma’s in a list!

P3A spent time learning about why and when we might use comma’s. They enjoyed using macaroni pasta as their comma’s and inserting them into the correct spaces in various lists.

Literacy Writing - Writing Instructions

This week P3A enjoyed making teddybear toast. When the boys and girls had finished eating their toast they wrote a set of instructions for how to create teddybear toast. The instructions included time connectives and bossy verbs.

Literacy Writing - Sequencing Instructions

This week we worked with a partner to make a jam sandwich. When we had finished we discussed the instructions required to make the jam sandwich. We remembered to use bossy verbs to structure our instructions.

Literacy Writing - Following Instructions

This week P3A have been investigating oral instructions. The childen played games in pairs and listened carefully as they were provided with oral instructions by an adult. The instruction games encouraged the pupils to concentrate on their listening skills and share ideas with their partners.

Literacy Skills - Reading Vipers

In P3A we have thoroughly enjoyed exploring our focus text ‘A Squash and a Squeeze.’ It was such an entertaining and amusing story that we loved listening to and discussing. The children generated some great predictions about the text, gave great ideas about the events in the story, explored the feelings of the characters

and learnt lots of new vocabulary. We took part in a carousel of activities which allowed us to listen to and build on one another’s ideas. We are looking forward to reading out next book. 📚👵🏻🐔🐷🐮🏡

Rhyming Dominoes

We enjoyed revising rhyming words by playing rhyming dominoes. We worked in small groups to create links between rhyming pairs. Rhyme is a key concept within literacy. We enhance our phonological awareness as we develop our understanding of rhyme.
