  • 🔴⚫ John McKay of Down - GAA Co-Founder - 100th Anniversary Talk 🔴⚫

    Tue 28 Nov 2023

Sunday, 3 December at 7.30pm in the RGU GAA club in Downpatrick.

To mark the centenary of the death of John McKay, RGU Downpatrick and Down GAA will host a talk by the renowned historian Dr Dónal McAnallen on Sunday, 3 December at 7.30pm in the Russell Gaelic Union Club in Downpatrick.

John McKay was the only Ulster man among the seven founders of the GAA who met in Hayes' Hotel in Thurles on 1 November 1884. He was also one of the first three General Secretaries along with Michael Cusack and John Wyse Power.

McKay was born at Cargagh, Downpatrick in 1852 and died in London on 2 December 1923. His life, his role in the GAA, and his family is a fascinating story.

  • 🚦 Road Safety Week 2023 🚦

    Sun 26 Nov 2023

During Road Safety Week our pupils took part in some very important learning. Each class completed road safety activities and considered and discussed the best ways to stay safe when crossing the road. This learning culminated in an exciting road safety poster competition that each Key Stage took part in. There was stiff competition and some excellent posters with fantastic road safety messages were created by the pupils – a huge well done to the winners! We finished off the week by wearing blue as part of our ‘Be Bright Be Seen’ campaign for Road Safety as well as a great assembly delivered by Mr Rea that focussed on all things road safety.

We strongly encourage all our pupils to take on board the very important messages that have been discussed this week, especially as we are now well into the dark evenings.

  • 📚🧪P7s at Blackwater Integrated College 📚🧪

    Sun 26 Nov 2023

Over the course of the last few Fridays our P7s have been lucky enough to visit Blackwater Integrated College. The pupils had a wonderful time and enjoyed language, science and home economics lessons delivered by the staff at Blackwater. It was an excellent experience for the P7s, giving them a taste of life after St Colmcille’s.

A huge thank you to Blackwater Integrated College for hosting us and giving our pupils such memorable learning experiences.

  • 🛝🌳 Upgrading of Play Surfaces 🛝🌳

    Sat 25 Nov 2023

Our Playpark surface has recently been upgraded to play grade bark which will ensure our wonderful children can use our play facilities all year round. I am sure you will agree it is a lovely/safe area for the children to play & socialise in.

Special thanks to the EA Grounds Team personnel and their team leader Michael Fitzsimons (former pupil) for assisting us with the project and also to school community members Lawrence & Gareth Blaney (also former pupils) who gave generously of their woodworking talents (again).

  • 💙🌀 For Every Child, Every Right! Turn the World Blue for Children's Rights 🌀💙

    Fri 24 Nov 2023

This year we celebrated World Children's Day by turning the world blue for children's rights- wearing blue to school for the day! The theme for this year’s celebration was 'For Every Child, Every Right!' This means that all children globally should enjoy all Children's Rights, however we know that Children's Rights locally and globally are impacted negatively by many adversities including poverty, climate change and war. Children reflected on this during the week and took part in many fun activities to learn about the 17 Global Sustainable Development Goals that were established by the UN  in 2015 with the aim of ending extreme world poverty and improving our world by 2030!
