Easter Mental Maths Scavenger Hunt!
P4B tested their mental maths skills as they took part in an Easter Mental Maths Scavenger Hunt!
Dividing by 5!
We moved on to dividing by 5 this week! The children were given a range of questions on the chalkboard to work through. We used the truck of counting in 5s to find our answer!
Dividing by 2!
We continued our learning of dividing by 2 as we used the website “99 maths” to test our knowledge! This was a great resource that the children loved to use!
Dividing by 2!
We worked hard this week to master the skill of dividing by 2! We made great use of our rainbow garden to test our knowledge and use outside materials such as rocks to help us!
Problem Solving Challenge!
P4B worked in pairs to take on a tricky problem solving challenge this week! I was so impressed with their team work and number work. Well done P4B!
Venn Diagrams
P4B were using venn diagrams this week! This also tied into our WAU topic of “Polar Regions” as we sorted polar animals based on their features. This was a great practical activity and the children really enjoyed learning a new way to sort and display information!
P4B supermarket!
This week, we worked on making exact amounts with coins. The children loved the challenge of using the least amount of coins to buy an item. P4B opened up their very own shops that they could browse around. Once they decided what they wanted to buy, they went to the bank to get the right amount coins to buy the item. The children’s creativity was fantastic during this activity!
100 days of school!
To celebrate our 100 days of school, P4B took part in a range of different activities! First, we went outside and completed a number of different challenges. Children had to see how many star jumps they could do in 100 seconds. We then went to the daily mile to see how many laps we could do in 100 seconds. The children loved the challenge and enjoyed using the stopwatches! We also made 100 days of school glasses to celebrate!
Problem Solving-IZAK9
This week we used a fantastic resource in our school called Izak9! The children worked together to complete the problem solving activity. They were given a number that had to go at the top of their tower. The numbers on the blocks below had to add up to equal the number at the top of the tower. We had lots of fun using this and can’t wait to use IZAK9 again!
Find one quarter of an amount!
P4B took part in a range of practical and digital activities during our Numeracy carousel! In the tuff tray, children used counters to help them work out 1/4 of an amount. On the iPads, children answered quick fire 1/4 questions. They used the mental maths strategy of halving the number and halving it again to find 1/4!
Multiplication Arrays
P4B used play dough the create a range of multiplication arrays. This really helped us gain a better understanding of our times tables!
Tangram Pictures!
P4B used their knowledge of 2D shapes to create tangram pictures!
2D Shapes
This week, P4B revised 2D shapes. We went on a shape hunt around the school. As well as this, we used matchsticks and lollipop sticks to build 2D shapes. This was a great opportunity to discuss the properties of the different shapes. We also used the app ‘Patterns Shapes’. Children were challenged to create pictures using a range of different 2D shapes. P4B were very creative with this, and they came up with some fantastic pictures!
Maths week challenge!
As part of ‘Maths Week’, P4B took part in a mental maths code breaker challenge. In our rainbow garden, children had to search for cards that contained mental maths questions. Using the answers from the mental maths question cards, the children worked out what the secret message was. This was to great way to practice our mental maths strategies and P4B certainly seemed to enjoy the challenge!
Building with Base Ten!
This week we continued to work on place value! P4B were set a challenge where they had to build a structure using ‘Base Ten’ resources. Once they had built their structure, they had to work out what number their structure represented. This was a great way for P4B to practice using Base Ten to represent a number!
Area!
This week, the children were introduced to area. Children explored this concept using counters. They covered the area of different objects with counters to measure the area of the object using nonstandard measurements. P4B had a lot of fun during this activity!
Place Value!
P4B took part in a range of practical activities to practice their place value skills. The children loved using the Base 10 resource!
Capacity
P4B were introduced to capacity this week! Children worked in teams to take part in the ‘Hole in the Bucket Challenge’. Children had to take turns filling up a bucket (with a hole in the bottom) and putting the water into another bucket. We then measured the capacity of the bucket for each team using a measuring jug. This was a very engaging way of teaching P4B how to measure capacity!
Number Sequences!
P4B were learning how to create and identify number sequences. The children created some brilliant number sequences and showed great knowledge to identify and continue number sequences!
Measuring Length using metre sticks!
After measuring the length of objects around our school using nonstandard units, the class were introduced to using standard units of measurement. P4B used metre sticks to measure the length of objects in our rainbow garden. After measuring the objects in metres, we then learnt how to convert our measurement to centimetres!
Length!
Our focus for this week was length! We began the week using nonstandard units of measurement to measure different objects in our classroom and at our daily mile track. Children used a range of nonstandard units of measure such as their hands, feet, strides, cubes and pencils! Orlaith and Jessie found out that the daily mile is 170 strides long! Back in the classroom, we had a discussion about the problems of using nonstandard units of measure and what we could use to record the length of objects more accurately!
What's my number?
P4B played a game of “guess my number” to help develop their mathematical language. A child was brought to the front and told to think of a number in their head. The class then asked questions to try and find out the number. For example, “Is your number between 44 and 54” or “Is it the number after 88”. The use of mathematical language from P4B was fantastic!
Number recognition (before, after, in between)
This week, P4B are learning how to find the number that comes before, after or in between two numbers. To begin, all children were given a number and were asked to create a number line using their knowledge of number. Children then swapped numbers and had to match themselves to a number that came before or after their new number. P4B love getting outdoors to learn!
