Downpatrick Chess Club
Two years ago, Mark and I approached Mr. Stephen Austin from St. Colmcille's Primary School, Downpatrick with an idea: to start an after-school chess club. What began as a small initiative quickly gained momentum. Soon, other schools began reaching out, asking if we could bring a chess club to them as well. And just like that, Downpatrick Chess Club was born!
Many people, schools, and local businesses have played a part in shaping who we are today—but we wanted to take a moment to go back to where it all started. We asked Stephen to share his thoughts and experiences from those early days.
Here’s what he had to say:
What made you say yes when we first asked about starting a chess club?
At St Colmcille's PS we want to give every child as many opportunities for holistic development as possible. There is a strong link between improved academic ability and an ability to play chess. The benefits of chess as a teaching tool is that it stimulates children's minds and helps them to build skills in critical thinking, problem solving and becoming independent decision makers while enjoying themselves. These conclusions have been backed up by educational research.
Did you expect the club to grow or become what it is today?
After meeting with Mark & Aine and discovering their passion & enthusiasm for Chess I had every confidence that they would be able to make their sport popular/attractive within Downpatrick!
Have you noticed any changes in students who are part of the chess club?
Our children have benefitted in so many ways.....
Intellectual Skills, Memory and critical thinking
Problem-Solving And Planning Ahead, Character building, Creativity & Engagement and focus.
What do you think chess teaches students beyond the game itself?
Character, independence, self esteem, competitive Spirit & sense of fair play. Escapism from screen time is not be underestimated and an opportunity to meet new friends.
Would you recommend that other schools start a chess club? Why or why not?
Absolutely- chess should be mandatory in all schools as part of the curriculum (for the holistic development points outlined above)!
Do you have any favorite memories or moments from visiting the club or hearing about our matches?
I really admire the creative ways in which you make chess attractive for local children through interschool competitions and McChess.
Thank you, Mr. Austin, for taking a chance on us! Your support played a key role in helping our club grow beyond anything we ever imagined.
We’ll be continuing our series of interviews over the coming months—stay tuned to hear from more of the incredible people who’ve been part of our journey
