  • ✏️📖 Rights Respecting Pupils & Duty Bearer of the Week 📖✏️

    Fri 28 Apr 2023

Congratulations to our Rights Respecting Pupils of the Week. These are pupils who have gone above and beyond to promote and learn about rights and who help make sure that the rights of all children in our school are upheld. Well done boys and girls!

Our Rights Steering Group this week, following consultation with their peers, selected Mr Hanna as our Duty Bearer of the Week! Mr Hanna ensures that all children have the right to play by joining in and playing fun games with them. He also helps makes sure all children are heard and valued within our school by spending time to get to know all our wonderful children and building a positive relationship with them. Well done to all our rights winners this week!

  • 🐶 Canine Therapy 🐶

    Fri 28 Apr 2023

Some of our nurture pupils got the opportunity to take part in canine therapy today with the lovely Heidi.

Dog therapy can help children to relax and calm their bodies as well as helping with emotion regulation. Dogs are fantastic listeners and can often be easier to talk to than a human!

The children loved getting to play with Heidi and learning how to take care of her today. Thank you to Rachel Fitzpatrick (parent & Heidi’s owner) for facilitating and leading these sessions. 🐾🐾

  • 📚👩‍🏫 Parental Phonics Workshop 📚👩‍🏫

    Fri 28 Apr 2023

On Tuesday, Mrs O’Dowd, Miss Vaughan and Mrs Rooney organised and hosted a Parental Phonics Workshop to inform parents of the programmes and strategies used in the teaching of reading and writing in the school.

The workshop focused on the theory and practise of the Jolly Phonics and Linguistic phonics programmes and gave families an overview of how reading and writing is taught throughout school. A range of practical activities, used in class, were explored, These activities help develop letter recognition, letter formation, blending and segmenting sounds to read and spell words, and parents/carers had the opportunity to try out some of these fun and interactive ways of learning.

Feedback from the workshop was extremely positive and families expressed how helpful this training will be in supporting their children’s reading and spelling. We aim to facilitate this Parental Phonics Workshop again in the future and would highly recommend participation to parents/carers who are interested in supporting their children with their reading, writing, and spelling.

  • 🌳🌸 Nursery Partnership 🌳🌸

    Fri 28 Apr 2023

This week we were delighted to welcome Littleones Day Nursery to our school, to enjoy our Pond & Nature Area and Daily Mile Track. The girls and boys spent time exploring our outdoor areas, developing their play skills and emotional well-being. At St. Colmcille’s PS, we believe that our outdoor learning environments are a powerful resource that help develop our pupils and benefit the wider community of Downpatrick also. We are looking forward to our continuing partnership with Littleones and the benefits our community links will bring to our school and the wider area.
