Literacy

The children came into school this morning to find someone had left them a basket of delicious chocolate eggs, however by break time...they were gone! The children needed to use their inferencing skills to find out who had taken the eggs. Thankfully, the children were fantastic detectives and carefully read each clue to find out that the chick had taken the Easter eggs. Miss Barbour and the children in P2A asked the chick if they could have their eggs back and he agreed! Great detective work Primary 2!

The Deep Dark Woods - Digital Arts Descriptions!

This week, we read the story 'The Deep Dark Woods' by Algy Craig Hall. During our Literacy Skills lesson, the children used the PicCollage Edu app to add a picture of the forest and then used a range of adjectives to describe and label the picture. Take a look at the fantastic work the children created!

During our morning table-top activities this week, we revised some of our diagraph sounds through activity-based learning. We used shaving foam to write words containing the 'sh' sound. Olivia suggested that we could draw pictures of things that have the 'sh' sound which was such a fantastic idea! We used chocolate playdough to form the 'ch' sound and we used our teeth template to help us write the 'th' sound. We really enjoyed using the toothbrush to scrub and clean the teeth!

Jolly Phonics - Ch Sound

We played our favourite game 'Guess and Groove' to help us read and spell words containing the 'ch' sound. We worked in pairs during this lesson which helped us when trying to figure out which 'ch' sound would match the picture. We sounded out each word and then worked together to write it down on a whiteboard. If our picture was displayed on the whiteboard, then we got 2 points! This was a great way for us to practise counting in 2s too!

Jolly Phonics - Sh sound

We played our favourite game 'Guess and Groove' to help us read and spell words containing the 'sh' sound. We worked in pairs during this lesson which helped us when trying to figure out which 'sh' sound would match the picture. We sounded out each word and then worked together to write it down on a whiteboard. If our picture was displayed on the whiteboard, then we got 5 points! This was a great way for us to practise counting in 5s too!

We played our favourite game 'Guess and Groove' to help us read and spell words containing the 'oo' sound. We worked in pairs during this lesson which helped us when trying to figure out which 'oo' sound would match the picture. We sounded out each word and then worked together to write it down on a whiteboard. If our picture was displayed on the whiteboard, then we got 10 points! This was a great way for us to practise counting in 10s too!

Armagh Rhymers

Our morning tabletop activities this week have been to consolidate our understanding of rhyme! The children played Rhyming Rockets', Rhyming Rainbows, Rhyming Bingo and identified two or three rhyming words using clips and pegs! We are so settled in the mornings and always working so hard!

CVCC and CCVC Spelling Practise!

Happy New Year everyone! We had a wonderful first week back at school and have learned lots of new things already! In phonics, we have started identifying the sounds in CVCC and CCVC words. Miss Barbour displayed a picture on the IWB and gave us the four letters needed to spell the words, but the issue was that they were scrambled. We segmented and blended the words and then worked together to place the letters in the correct place to spell the words!

As an introduction to rhyming words in Primary 2, the children worked in pairs to play a game called 'Switch Spots'. All children needed was a clipboard, some colouring pencils and a partner! Two pictures were displayed on the IWB and the children needed to decide whether they were a rhyming pair or not. If the words sounded the same, then they coloured a thumbs up and if they did not rhyme then they coloured a thumbs down.

The children have been learning about vowel sounds this week. We listened to a very catchy song that we were singing all week long, we identified the vowel sounds in the alphabet and then we had a go at spelling some CVC words where the middle vowel sound was missing!

We played our favourite phonics game today to help us identify the ending sound in CVC words. Two pictures were displayed on the IWB along with the beginning and middle sound. The children needed to work in pairs to complete the CVC word by adding the correct ending sound. We also practised counting in 2s as each word spelled correctly earned the team two points!

This week we focused on our last three Jolly Phonics sounds...Ww, Yy, Xx. Our morning activities consisted of forming the letter Yy using yellow playdough, using chalk markers to write the letter Ww on the windows and designing our treasure maps, and choosing where to put our 'X marks the spot'

Our focus sounds in phonics this week were Bb, Jj and Zz. We revised the sound they made and how to form the upper and lowercase letters correctly. Then we took part in a range of carrousel activities to consolidate our learning. We formed the letter Bb using counting bears and buzzy bees, used jellybeans to create the letter Jj, and used zebra print paper to form the letter Zz. Miss Barbour is so impressed with the progress we are making in phonics!

To complete our instruction writing topic, we carved a pumpkin and created a Jack O' Lantern.

First, Mrs Polly cut the lid off.

Then, we scooped out the seeds.

Afterwards, she drew the face on.

Next, she carefully cut out the eyes, nose and mouth.

Finally, we put a candle inside.

Happy Halloween!

We read the story 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' this week and as part of our instruction writing, we made some delicious porridge!

First, we put some oats in a bowl.

Next, we added milk in the bowl.

Then, we mixed everything with a spoon.

After, we cooked it in the microwave.

Finally, we tried the porridge.

You can see from these photos that we thought this porridge was just right!

DGOULF Sort

Our Jolly Phonics revision this week focused on the sounds Uu, Ll and Ff and we took part in lots of fun tabletop activities to revise the sounds they make and how to form the letters correctly. We practised forming the letter l using Lego and Autumn leaves and we wrote our letter f using flumps and fruit pastels! Miss Barbour was so impressed with how engaged we were with these activities!

Jolly Phonics - Dd, Gg, Oo

Our morning activities this week focused on the correct letter formation of our new sounds Dd, Gg and Oo. We practised forming the letter d using dice, dinosaurs and dominoes. We used Cheerios to form the letter o and we also took part in a listening game where we had to complete some riddles by matching them to the correct picture with the initial sound g. Some of these riddles were about glasses, a girl and a glue stick!

Jolly Phonics - Hh, Rr, Mm

This week we revised the Jolly Phonics sounds Hh, Rr, and Mm. We posted our capital and lowercase letters into the correct house. We used 'Rainbow Writing' to practise forming the letter Rr and we used money to form the letter Mm. Have a look at us taking part in these fun carousel activities!

We have been revising the Jolly Phonics sounds Cc, Kk and Ee this week and we took part in lots of fun ABL activities to consolidate our understanding of sounds and letter formation. We used cars, conkers and counters to form the letter Cc. We identified words that have the initial sound Kk through a game of dominoes, and we used elephants to form the letter Ee

Our book for this week was called 'The Disgusting Sandwich' which was about a delicious white bread and peanut butter sandwich. Throughout the story, it meets a little boy, a badger, a squirrel, a frog, a crow and a fox. By the end of the story it is cover in 'sand and smelly green goop, and big black squish marks, and hundreds of ants and grimy old feathers and slippery slime and oozy grey bubbles'. It is DISGUSTING! We loved this story so much, that we decided we would take our learning outside and create our very own disgusting sandwiches. We then took part in a show-and-tell activity where we used lots of descriptive words and also provided us with instructions on how they made them.

If anyone would like a recipe for our disgusting sandwiches, then come and visit P2A!

Instruction Writing: Shared Write

Our story this week was 'The Enormous Turnip' which taught us a lot about the process of planting seeds. We were each given a pot, some soil, and seeds and worked with the adults to plant our seeds. Once, we had completed this activity we took part in a shared writing activity where we wrote a set of instructions for our friends in Primary 2B who were also going to be planting some seeds this week!

We needed: soil, a pot, cress seeds, water, and a shovel.

First, we put soil in the pot.

Next, we dug a hole in the soil.

Then, we put seeds in the hole.

After, we watered the plant.

Finally, we watch it grow.

We know our plants need sun and water to grow. We are excited to watch the growing process over the next few weeks!

We have been reading 'The Gingerbread Man' in Primary 2 and we loved the story so much that we decided to make gingerbread men! The first thing we did was discuss and create a list of things we would need to decorate our gingerbread and then we got to work. Once we decorated them, Miss Barbour showed us how we would write a set of instructions for someone to follow which included bossy verbs and time connectives!

First, we spread the icing on the gingerbread man.

Next, we added eyes and a smile.

After, we put jolly jelly buttons on the gingerbread man.

Finally, we ate him!

We thoroughly enjoyed this lesson, but had to eat up quickly... in case our gingerbread men ran away!

Jolly Phonics - Ii, Pp, Nn

This week in Jolly Phonics we focused on Ii, Pp and Nn and took part in lots of fun activities which helped us practise our letter formation and initial sound recognition. We wrote capital and lowercase Ii on icy igloos, practised Nn letter formation on necklaces and practised letter Pp formation using pink and purple playdough!

As part of our instruction writing topic, we made toast! The first thing we did was create a list of everything we would need. This included: A toaster, bread, butter, jam, a knife, and some plates. Then we worked with Miss Barbour to write each step-by-step instruction.

First, we put the bread in the toasted.

Then we spread the butter on.

Next, we spread the jam on.

Finally, we got to eat our toast. Yum!

Instruction Writing: Familiarisation

This week we read the story 'The Three Little Pigs' and used the characters and houses from the story to introduce our instruction writing topic. Children were given a character from our story and had to follow the instructions to place them in the correct place. We showed Miss Barbour that we are fabulous at following instructions in Primary 2!

Ss, Aa, Tt Sorting!

Jolly Phonics Revision: Ss, Aa, Tt

At the beginning of Primary 2, we are focusing on revising the Jolly Phonics sounds we covered in Primary 1! This week we looked at s, a, and t. We discussed each letter's name, the sound it makes, and how to form the letter correctly. We then took part in carrousel activities where we formed our letter Ss in the sand, painted some apples, and formed our letter t on some teeth and cleaned them off using a toothbrush!
