Numeracy

Easter Egg Numeracy Hunt๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฃ

Primary Two had so much fun this week partaking in a Numeracy related Easter egg hunt. The boys and girls enjoyed revising some of the number concepts they have explore so far this year such as, doubles and counting on. Primary Two did such a fantastic job that the Easter Bunny rewarded them with some yummy chocolate treats! ๐Ÿซ ๐Ÿฐ

Primary Two enjoyed practically exploring tens and units this week. The boys and girls used Base 10 to build various different numbers. Miss Walsh was so impressed with children’s ability to work with numbers to 50! Well done!

Primary Two deepened their understanding of addition this week by exploring missing addends. We learned that an addend is a number being added to another number. If an addend is missing from a sum, we can subtract the answer and the other addend to find out what is missing!

Making Clock Faces and Exploring Oโ€™Clock Times ๐Ÿ•ฃโฑ

Primary Two enjoyed some outdoor learning this week when exploring our new Number Topic, clock. The children worked in groups to create their very own clock faces and then explored ‘o’clock’ times. Just fantastic! โฑ

Balloon Popping Problem Solving ๐ŸŽˆ๐ŸŽˆ

Measuring Wriggly Worms Using Non-Standard Units ๐Ÿชฑ

Primary Two were set the very important task of measuring worms using cubes from our shared reading book, ‘Super Worm’ this week. The boys and girls enjoyed estimating how many cubes each worm would measure in length before completing their task. We discovered that the more cubes used to measure a worm, the longer the worm was!

Primary 2 worked practically this week to explore that addition is commutative. We worked together to realise that if we flipped an addition sum we would get the same answer. For example, 4 + 2 = 6 and 2 + 4= 6. The children also discovered that it was easier to count on from the larger number in the number sentence than the smaller. Super work Primary Two!

Mother Bear Problem Solving ๐Ÿป๐Ÿป

Primary Two were continuing to problem solve using the ‘act it out’ strategy. The children worked together in groups to solve word problems regarding Mother Bear and her five cubs. Together the children solved how many buttons would be needed altogether for the cubs’ coats. Fantastic work P2! ๐Ÿป๐Ÿป๐Ÿป

Using our Number Line to Add โž•

This week the children explored addition through ‘counting on’ with the help of their number line. Primary Two took it in turns to give each other a number sentence, for example, 2 + 3=, and then they hopped forward like little bunnies to find the answer! The children had so much fun solving  calculations with their number cones and have even began to perform calculations mentally! Keep up the hard work!

Elf Call- Problem Solving ๐ŸŽ…

Santa Claus sent some elves to Primary 2B’s classroom this week to help the children develop their problem solving skills. Working together and alongside the elves the boys and girls had to answer questions such as:

๐ŸŽ„I have 4 elves, how many elves do I need to to make 6? "4 plus 2 equals 6" - Mason
๐ŸŽ„How many elf shoes does Santa Claus need for 6 elves? "Counting in twos will be quick" - Riley
๐ŸŽ„3 elves wrap 2 presents, how many presents are there?

The children deeply considered each problem, discussing their ideas and strategies and really impressed Miss Walsh. Santa Claus will be so happy when the elves return to the North Pole to hear how fantastic they P2B are!

P2B are AMAZING at Addition!โž•

Primary Two have enjoyed practically exploring addition over the past few weeks through the use of games, songs and  practical learning. The children have used pictures, number lines and ‘counted on’ as ways of adding. They have even began adding three numbers! Check out their amazing work!๐Ÿ‘

Comparing Weight โš–๏ธ

This week Miss Walsh set the children the very important task of weighing some of our classroom objects. The children firstly had to estimate which objects would be the heaviest and which would be the lightest. We then used our balance scales to compare the objects. The children worked brilliantly together and even investigated combining the weights of objects to balance the scales. Super work P2!

Ladybird Doubles ๐Ÿž

โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹Some ladybird friends helped Primary Two to explore doubles this week. A double is a number that is twice as large as the given number. Primary Two worked determinedly to double the ladybird spots up to 10. Well done children!

Weight- Heavier and Lighter โš–๏ธ

To begin our new Numeracy topic, weight, the children made their very own balance scales. The children learned that weight is a measure of how heavy something is. Some objects are  light and some are heavy. We can use scales to measure how heavy or light something is. Using our balance scales the children explored balancing natural materials. They discovered that when the scale dipped down the object were heavier and  when it dipped up the objects were lighter. The children used this terminology with confidence - fantastic investigative work!

Maths Week: Halloween ABL ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‘ป

โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹To celebrate Maths Week Ireland the children engaged in practical activities consolidating their understanding of numbers to 20. Some of the activities included embarking on a spooky number scavenger hunt, selecting the correct amount of ingredients for a witch's brew and placing a specific amount of eyes on silly monsters.

Spooktacular Numeracy work P2!

Finding a Pattern: Pairing Socks!๐Ÿงฆ

Building on our problem-solving strategy of 'finding a pattern,' the children completed an activity where they had to pair lots of socks. Firstly, the children were tasked with working out how many pairs 6 socks would be. They then had to work together to solve how many socks they would have if they  had  7 pairs. Finally, they had to explain why 15 socks could not be paired. This work was a little tricky, but the children truly impressed the adults with their ability to explain their reasoning and thinking. Super work!

2D Shape Carroll Diagram๐ŸŸง๐Ÿ”บ

The children deepened their learning on 2D shapes by exploring some of their properties. Primary Two sorted 2D shapes to one criteria through a Carroll Diagram. The children grouped shapes with 4 sides together and shapes without 4 sides together. Great sorting!

Ordinal Numbers๐Ÿฅ‡๐Ÿฅˆ๐Ÿฅ‰

The children had so much fun this week partaking in a car race with their peers to help understand ordinal numbers. We use ordinal numbers to order and position items and numbers, for example, first, second, third and fourth. The children loved competing against each other and deciding where each car placed in the race! Sometimes it was hard to tell because the cars were close together or it was a tie.  We cannot wait to complete more exciting activities on ordinal numbers! ๐Ÿš—

Ordinal Numbers Animal Line Up๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿง

This week some very silly animals decided to hide themselves around our school! So, Primary Two were sent on a mission around the school to find the animals and decide where they placed in a line up. Miss Walsh was so impressed with the children’s ability  to place the animals up to the tenth position. Look at all our hard work!

Apple Printing Pattern Work๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ

Autumn is upon us and Primary Two have learnt that apples are a fruit associated with this time of year. So, this week as we continued to explore pattern, we decided to use some of the apples from Miss Walsh’s apple tree to print repeated patterns! We thought it would be a good idea to pick autumnal colours for our prints.๐Ÿ Take a look at our amazing autumnal apple patterns!

P2B are Shape Detectives๐Ÿ”บ๐Ÿ”ด๐ŸŸฉ

This week Primary Two enjoyed finding many common 2D shapes in our outdoor learning space. The children worked determinedly to locate a range of shapes from pentagons to parallelograms! They then enjoyed discussing the shape names and comparing some of their properties. Excellent participation from all!

Roald Dahl Day Chocolate Patterns ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿญ

To celebrate Roald Dahl Day, the children tested their problem solving skills to complete a repeated pattern of chocolates. Primary Two proved to be excellent problem solvers and created some delicious looking patterns! Willy Wonka would be very proud! ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ

Sequencing Numbers to 101๏ธโƒฃ2๏ธโƒฃ3๏ธโƒฃ

Primary Two have been hard at work  this week revising number sequences to 10. The children worked together to participate in a range of practical activities both inside and outside of the classroom. Miss Walsh was so impressed with the children’s confidence when working with numbers. Well done P2!
