World Around Us

Minibeast Hunt at Castlewellan Forest Park

Minibeast Collage

Minibeast Experiment

We are learning about minibeasts. We made some paper caterpillars and raced each other on different material. We predicted that the caterpillar would move slower on the rough material and they would be easier to move on shiny, smooth material. We had great fun racing our caterpillars and we found out that our predictions were correct!

Science Week

We added water to the crystals. They bonded to form a bouncy ball.

WALT: Create a chemical reaction

WILF: I can make the volcano erupt

Dinosaur Fossils

We have been learning about dinosaur features and fossils. We had great fun making them! Can you work out which dinosaurs we have created?

Dinosaur Projects

Take a look at our fantastic dinosaur projects that we completed at home! Didn’t we do well!

WALT: Identify dinosaurs from a description

We have been learning to name different dinosaurs. We have researched their size, what they eat, how they move and their individual characteristics that make them stand out. We read clues and from the facts we knew, we matched the correct dinosaur picture to each set of clues.

Melting ice experiment

We have been learning all about polar regions. We tried to free the polar animals from the frozen ice cubes using different materials and a variety of tools! We found that when we added salt, the ice melted quicker. This is because salt lowers the freezing point of water. We had great fun freeing the animals and learning the science behind it.

  W.A.L.T: Explore how airplanes fly.

Today the children enjoyed learning about airplanes. We learnt about the Montgolfier brothers who invented the first hot air balloon, which inspired others to power aircrafts. We also learnt about the different types of planes we have today. Then, we spent time labelling the parts of an airplane, including the body, tail, landing gear and wings. Finally, the children made their own paper airplanes and carried out experiments to see which travelled the farthest distance.

W.A.L.T: Design a boat which will float in the pond.

The children watched a video which explained how boats stay afloat. We discussed the various types of boats we know, such as canoes, fishing boats and cruise ships. Then, the children designed and made their own boats using tinfoil and card. We went to our school pond to test out the boats and they all stayed afloat!

W.A.L.T: Understand which materials float and sink.

This week we have been exploring forms of transport in the sea, which brought about the question ‘How do boats float?’ The children enjoyed investigating which classroom objects float and sink, reflecting on the materials each object is made from. First, they made predictions and then tested the classroom objects in a box of water, before sorting them into the correct category. They engaged in a great discussion about why certain materials float and others sink.
