The World Around Us

07.03.24 Digital Art

Today was a lovely opportunity to investigate different colour hue’s as we worked together to create some digital artwork. We focused our learning on the colour wheel and explored the appropriate hue’s to make a realistic polar scene.

06.03.24 Oceans

As we begin to explore our new topic we are learning about all of the different oceans around the world. Today we put our teamwork and communication skills to good use as we worked against the clock to complete an oceans jigsaw.

05.03.24 Fantastic Find!

We were delighted to begin exploring our new Oceans topic today as one of our P4 pupils brought in a beautiful piece of the coral reef for us to look at. This piece of coral travelled all the way from the Indian Ocean!

28.02.24 Survival Backpacks

Today we used our imaginative and problem solving skills to create a survival backpack for the arctic, using recyclable materials. This task encouraged us to become creative with sizes and shapes and to prioritise the most important items needed to survive cold arctic temperatures.

24.01.24 3D Polar Bear’s

As we explore more about our topic Polar Regions, we have learnt about all of the different animals who inhabit places like the Arctic. Today we focused our attention on the mighty Polar Bear and took the opportunity to make our own 3D versions. We followed instructions and used scissors, glue and cotton buds to create a more realistic replica.
Fun fact: A Polar Bears skin is actually black!

16.01.24 Marshmallow Igloo’s

We channelled our inner Inuits today as we built our very own igloo’s from paper bowls, glue and marshmallows. The Inuit people from the Arctic spend hours building igloo’s as homes to live in.
Fun fact: Inuit people use stretched animal skin as insulation!

09.01.24 Polar Regions

Today we started planning and evaluating our learning as we started a new topic called Polar Regions. Together we discussed what we already know about Polar Regions and talked about some of the things we would like to find out. With this information we were able to complete our KWL grid.

13.12.23 Light’s, Camel, Action!
We have had a busy month preparing for our 2023 Christmas performance. This year we have chosen to perform Light’s, Camel, Action, to tell the story of the Nativity with a modern twist. We have worked hard to learn our lines and get into character, and have had lots of fun while doing so!
We hope you enjoy the show!

30.11.23 Little Miss Muffet at the Pantomime!
We took a trip out of school today and visited the Down Arts Centre for a fantastic Pantomime. We met lots of different characters who told the story of Little Miss Muffet. Some pupils in our class even got the chance to go on stage to help pull the poor spider out of the well.

24.11.23 Chinese Lanterns

Lots of fun was had today in P4B, learning about the Chinese New Year. We talked about the significance of the animals in the Chinese calendar and learnt about the different ways in which people celebrate the new year in China. We especially enjoyed learning about the lantern festival which marks the end of the new year celebration. Then it was time to put our creative skills to good use to make our very own Chinese lanterns!

08.11.23 Celebrations

We started a new topic today called ‘Celebrations’. Our first task was to work together to match different celebrations to their country of origin on a large map of the world. Some of the celebrations even originated from two different countries!

06.10.23 Taste Test!
We had lots of fun today expanding our taste buds while we tried some foods from around the world. It was exciting to experience food from different cultures from the comfort of our own classroom. These foods included German pretzels, Indian popadoms, Italian breadsticks and Mexican nachos. We decided which foods we liked and which foods we didn’t enjoy as much, and recorded our reason why.

05.10.23 Healthy Hearts

We spent some time outdoors today working in groups to record our heart rate before and after exercising. We used stop watches and recorded our results on clipboards. The exercises that we completed included jumping jacks, high knees, running and squats. It was helpful to use the measurement of beats per minute to help us to understand exercising for a healthy heart!

20.09.23 Venn and Carroll Diagrams

We worked hard today to study the fat content of common food labels. We used Venn and Carroll diagrams to distinguish which foods had a high saturated fat content and which foods were had a low saturated fat content. This sparked our interest to check our own snacks at breaktime!

19.09.23 Persuasive Adverts

Today we used our thinking skills to identify and record the key features of persuasive healthy eating adverts. This activity has put us in mood to eat healthy food!

12.09.23 Healthy Lifestyles

In P4B today we began the planning process for our new topic; Healthy Lifestyles. We recorded what we already know about the topic, before discussing some of information that we want to find out. Our ideas were displayed on the class KWL chart, which we look forward to adding to as we explore the topic further.
