๐ญ๐งช๐ฅผ Scientists of the Week ๐ญ๐งช๐ฅผ
Sat 25 Mar 2023This week, our class ‘Scientists of the Week’ were announced. These budding scientists were chosen by their class teachers, due to their enthusiasm, scientific curiosity shown and their effectiveness in following the six stages of a scientific method when undertaking an investigation. Within these investigations, each class posed their own scientific question to base an investigation on. These questions varied from class to class, but some examples included: ‘Is toothpaste actually effective?’, ‘Can we create a working parachute?’, ‘Can a drawing float in water?’ and ‘Can a rain cloud be created in a jar?’. Our pupils have also been working hard this week to present their 'Power Projects' to the rest of their class. Key Stage winners will be announced and awarded next week once children have had a chance to present.
Well done to our ‘Scientist of the Week’ winners, who are pictured within their key Stages! -
๐๐ฐ Charity Fundraising ๐๐ฐ
Sat 25 Mar 2023A number of the staff of St. Colmcille’s PS, recently participated in a mixed rules basketball/netball tournament to raise money for our chosen charity partners, with other staff donating also. The tournament was very competitive and enjoyable, with the Black/Grey Team triumphing and the White Team taking the wooden spoon! A special thanks to Mr Lyttle for organising the staff charity fundraising event. The money raised, along with Green Day donations, came to more than £1000! We are therefore delighted to donate £500 of this to Trocaire and another £500 to Cancer Focus Northern Ireland, with the remaining money raised going towards our Cost of Living Crisis Support initiatives. Thank you to all members of our school community who donated for Green Day and to our staff, friends and families for raising a fantastic amount of sponsorship, all of which will support these great causes to help those in need.

๐ซถ Love For Life Workshops ๐ซถ
Sat 25 Mar 2023This week, children in Primary 6 enjoyed a workshop based on ‘Choices and Changes’, a very informative talk about the choices we must make through life and how we can deal with them. They also thought about their own strengths and chatted about who at home is their podium person that they can rely on at home, at school or at their clubs outside of school. Primary 7 pupils explored the theme, ‘What’s Inside?’, where they identified how ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ occur in all of our loves and how we can be resilient through these challenges. The children also explored the changes they will go through as they get older and the key steps they can take to support themselves on this journey. These were very enjoyable and beneficial workshops, which was enjoyed by all in Primary 6 and 7. Many thanks to ‘Love for Life’ for their support in planning and delivering these workshops.

๐ฅ Introducing Drumming Lessons ๐ฅ
Fri 24 Mar 2023St. Colmcille’s is proud to further expand our musical tuition provision. Alongside our popular guitar and violin lessons, we have recently introduced Drumming lessons for pupils. Drumming is an excellent addition to our musical tuition in school, as it helps children with communication, their ability to control their body through multitasking and helps to develop both the creative and logic sides of the brain. Drumming is fantastic at strengthening key mathematical skills such as counting, as well as developing crucial musical skills such as rhythm and
maintaining a beat. Most importantly, drumming is lots of FUN! Our lessons are provided by professional drummer, Mr Martin Galbraith, who has been drumming for 30 years and has played with amazing artists such as Bob Geldof! We love to see our pupils enjoying this wonderful
instrument and can’t wait to see their progress over the weeks to come.
