Addition Practical

Today, we began exploring addition using the column method. Pupils learnt that when the digits in the ones column add up to 10 or more, we need to exchange 10 ones for 1 ten and carry it over into the tens column. Using Base 10 equipment, pupils practically demonstrated this process and investigated why exchanging is necessary. By manipulating the resources themselves, they developed a deeper understanding of place value and could clearly see how 10 ones are equivalent to 1 ten. This hands-on activity helped to build confidence and understanding before moving on to more formal written calculations.
