Creating self-portraits using 2D shapes

The children enjoyed creating a self-portrait using a variety of 2D shapes. Before starting, they discussed which shapes would be suitable for different parts of the body and explained their choices. Together, we explored the properties of shapes and talked about why we cannot simply describe both a square and a rectangle as having four sides, learning that we need to look at other properties such as the lengths of the sides.

The children then chose their favourite colour and used it to create their picture. Finally, they used shape labels to correctly identify and name the shapes they had used in their self-portraits. This fun, hands-on activity helped to develop shape recognition, mathematical language, creativity and fine motor skills.
