WALT select and reject information (Modelled writing)

As part of our modelled writing lesson, pupils explored the question “Should animals be kept in a zoo?” They worked together to identify the advantages and disadvantages of zoos, carefully selecting the information that would be most useful for a balanced discussion text.

Pupils considered a range of facts and viewpoints, discussing which information was relevant and which details could be rejected because they did not support the purpose of the text. This helped develop their critical thinking skills and understanding of how writers choose the most important information for their audience.

Using the pupils’ ideas, the teacher then modelled how to organise and structure the selected information into a well-written discussion text.
