Then and Now: Firefighting Through Time

This week in World Around Us, P3 continued their learning about the Great Fire of London. We explored the different methods used to fight the fire, including water pumps, fire hooks and creating firebreaks by pulling down or blowing up houses to stop the flames spreading. We discussed which methods were effective and compared firefighting in 1666 with the equipment and techniques used today.

During our ABL activities, the children designed their own firefighting equipment, created comparison drawings of historic and modern firefighting methods, and used LEGO and wooden blocks to build London streets. They explored how closely packed houses helped the fire spread and how firebreaks could help stop it.

Other children used chalk, black card and cutting skills to create striking silhouette pictures showing what London's skyline might look like during a great fire today. Their blending and mixing of chalk colours created some fantastic effects, resulting in beautiful pieces of artwork. 🔥🎨🏙️✨
