Chocolate FairTrade
Today in World Around Us, we explored Fairtrade and its relationship to chocolate. Our topic is Chocolate, a well-loved treat, but one that has a more serious story behind it. Many people are unaware of the exploitation, cruelty, and unfair treatment that can take place in the chocolate industry. Millions of cocoa farmers around the world are not given enough resources or fair pay for the hard work they do.
We learned about Fairtrade and why it is so important for supporting cocoa farmers and ensuring they are treated fairly. We looked at Tony’s Chocolonely as an example of a Fairtrade chocolate company. As part of our lesson, we carried out a taste test of Tony’s chocolate and explored why the pieces are uneven. We discovered that this design symbolises the unequal and unfair distribution of wealth in the chocolate industry.
