Breaking down Multiplication
In Numeracy today, P5A explored how to break down multiplication using a place value strategy. We worked through the concept both practically and in written form so the children could see why the method works—not just how to do it.
One example we looked at was 5 × 30. To make this easier, the children first calculated 5 × 3 = 15 using their times tables knowledge. Once they had the answer, they discussed how 30 is really three tens, so we must add the zero back on, turning 15 into 150.
This strategy helps the children understand the value of each digit and builds confidence when working with larger numbers. This is the approach we practised together in class today.
