Farewell to our Primary 7s!

Over the past few days, we have been marking the final few moments of our Primary 7's primary school journey, as well as celebrating all their achievements!
Some of our celebrations included:
- The amazing trip to 'Tayto Park'
- A pizza party, to celebrate our pupils' achievements in the Young Enterprise workshop (Pizzas were paid for by Pupils' earnings from their 'Crafty cards' business)
- A P7a Leavers' Party
- The fun day and colour run to celebrate their final day of primary education!

Youth Initiatives workshop

The team from 'Youth Initatives' came to visit P7, in order to hold some transition activities. Thanks to Youth Initiatives for their support with our primary 7s this year!

Confirmation preparation: Father Murray’s Visit and Youth Initiatives workshop

As part of Primary 7’s preparations for receiving the sacrament of Confirmation, they have been taking part in several Pre-confirmation workshops. Each Wednesday in May, pupils have been exploring the sacrament of Confirmation through the fantastic Youth Initiatives workshop. In these workshops, the pupils have been taking part in exciting practical games and activities to help them prepare.
Futhermore, Fr Murray visited P7s today ahead of their confirmation next week, to explore some of the key themes in their learning and answer any questions that the pupils had.

10th Birthday for Daily Mile!

Today, we celebrated 10 years of the Daily Mile global initiative. To help celebrate, Primary 7 pupils teamed up with our wonderful Primary 1s to spend some time together completing the Daily Mile challenge, as well as explore and chat together. Our wonderful Daily Mile area provided a wonderful stimulus to explore and chat- both sets of pupils ahd a great time together!

Easter Fun Day

Congratulations to Miley, who played a starring role in a production of ‘Matilda The Musical’, which took place over the weekend. The production was choreographed by professionals and took place in front of a packed audience in the renowned Mac Theatre, Belfast. This was an amazing experience for Miley to be a part of and no doubt, will be an experience that she will always cherish. Well done, Miley on your terrific achievement and don’t forget us when you are selling out Broadway in future years! See the video below for a snippet of her performance!
Success for Grace!

A massive well done to Grace, who came 5th in an Irish dancing championship which took place in Belfast over the weekend. Another amazing result for Grace, which demonstrates her excellent talent and endeavour in preparing for these competitions- the hard work is certainly paying off! Well done, Grace, from all in P7a and the entire school community!
Science Week Gardening

As part of our way to mark science week and as part of our outdoor learning developments, both Primary 7 A and B have been working on planing flowers into the P7 planter box. More updates and images of this will be posted in due course. Primary 7 are excited to get their hands dirty in the sping and summer months!
Science Blast Presentation
29th March 2022
Over the past few weeks, Primary 7A have been taking part in the ‘ESB Science Blast’ project, which is organised by the RDS. The project requires pupils to come up with their own scientific investigation question, plan for an investigation, carry it out and finally, evaluate their findings.
Primary 7 A came up with a question, ‘Can home-made toothpaste be as effective as regular toothpaste in removing stains’.
After experimenting and evaluating their results, the class today presented their research findings via Zoom to their Judge: Dr. Penny, from Trinity College, Dublin
The class are very excited to receive their feedback from Dr. Penny in the coming weeks and finding out whether they will be awarded a trophy for their efforts. Well done, P7a!
’Love for Life’ RSE workshop

Today, Primary 7a took part in a workshop from ‘Love for Life’, which helped to support their school-based RSE learning. Everyone had fantastic fun with the team at Love for Life and enjoyed the valuable learning experience. See some images from the workshop below.

Engineers' Week- Microsoft Ireland workshop
9th March 2022
Today, Primary 7a took part in an online workshop in collaboration with Microsoft Ireland, where they got into the mindset of engineers! From this, they got to develop algorithyms in order to design and create their own oragami dogs and then their own 'Dog Hotel'. this also had to be 'Natural Disaster Proof'. We had great fun and learnt a great deal.

'Friends' Resiliance workshop with Nicci... as well as Libby and Teddy!

For this week's 'Friends' workshop with Nicci, P7a were joined by her ponies, 'Libby' and 'Teddy'! Using these ponies, we continued to explore our emotions, thoughts and feelings, as well how to regulate 'red' feelings into 'green' feelings. Have a look at some photos of today's learning, below!
World Book Day 2022

Primary 7 celebrated World Book Day year, focusing on the class story of 'Mulan', as well as partaking in a range of activities including:
- World Book Day Live lesson.
- Decorating our door in the theme of 'Mulan'.
- Creating chinese willow plate patterns.
- Redesigning the 'Mulan' book cover, using CC Express.

To mark the beginning of Lent, Primary 7 attended the Ash Wednesday service in St. Patrick's Church. After the service, we took time to explroe the new display in St. Patrick's Church, which outlines the story of St. Patrick.
Ireland's Future is Mine- Entry Submitted!

Since September, Primary 7a have been taking part in the 'Ireland's Future is Mine' nationwide Minecraft competition, in association with Microsoft Ireland and RTÉ.
During October and November, pupils took part in weekly Minecraft lessons and challenges, set my Corey and Amanda from Microsoft Dreamspace.
After completing all challenges, the competition was set: Pupils had to create a more sustainable version of their local area!
From November- February, P7a have taken time each week to plan for and create a more sustainable version of Downpatrick. They used the mantra of 'Plan- Do- Review' to help them achieve this.
After completing their creation last week, P7a spent this week creating and editing their video presentation (which could not exceed 3 minutes) using Apple iMovie software.
Now that their entry has been submitted, P7a pupils are waiting patiently to see if they have been selected as one of the Ulster winners, as well as whether they have made it to the All-Ireland Semi-Finals. Good luck P7a!

Safer Internet Day!

Primary 7a have been taking part in a range of tasks to celebrate 'Safer Internet Day'. This year's theme was: 'All fun and games?'
Using CC express (formely Adobe Spark), pupils created a range of 'Recipies' for Safer Internet Day. They also took part in a series of other Safer Internet Day activities throughout the week. See some photos of our activities below!
2nd February 2022
A huge congratulations to Miley, who has recently been selected to play a major role in the upcoming production of 'Matilda The Musical', in the Mac Theatre, Belfast!
Miley overcame the auditions to land a role of 'Amanda Thripp' in the musical. As part of her preparations for performing, she will be led in choreography by the renowned dancer, Ksenia Zsikhotska (as can be seen as a professional dancer on 'Dancing With the Stars', which airs on RTÉ TV currently).
Miley's class and the entire St. Colmcille's school community wishes Miley every success- we can't wait to hear how the preparations go over the coming months!
St. Brigid's Day

Primary 7a had wonderful fun on St. brigid's Day 2022, where they used rushes to creae traditional St. Brigid's Day crosses. Although it was tricky to begin with, they soon got the hang of it and created some wonderful creations. Well done, Primary 7!

Catholic Schools' Week 2022

This week in Primary 7a, we have been celebrating Catholic Schools' Week, in the theme of 'Living Life to the Full'. The themes for wach day were:
- Monday: Living life to the full with God.
- Tuesday: Living life to the full together (and celebrating School Mass).
- Wednesday: Living life together again (Grandparents' Day).
- Thursday: Living Life in Wonder and Awe.
- Friday: Living Life and facing the future.

There was huge cause for celebration in P7a today, as Grace took part in an Irish dancing competition in Derry over the weekend: coming an amzing 1st in the Slip Jig and 3rd in Hornpipe! Her class and the school community are very proud of her achievements!
'Money Wise' workshop

To begin our new World Around Us learning of 'Money Wise' and the young enterprise/ Junior Entrepreneur programme, we took part in a young enterprise workshop. As part of the challenges set, we had to work in teams to create a structure as tall as we can make it, using only the materials provided!

Today's ICT lesson focused on developing pupils' animation skills: particularly through the use of the Brush Ninja website. Have a look below at some of the fantastic animations created in the theme of Christmas'. Well done to Michael and Curtis, who finished 1st and 2nd in our class animation competition with their wonderful efforts! Michael also won the top animation across Key Stage 2 classes!

Representatives from both P7 classes and LSC4 were very lucky to be joined today by P6 and P7 pupils from St. Nicholas’ Primary School Ardglass to take part in some fun indoor sports in Downpatrick’s Ballymote centre. Pupils took part in games including basketball and football. The pupils learned some new skills and enjoyed having the opportunity to take part in exciting, new activities with new people. Thank you to the staff and pupils from St. Nicholas’ for joining us.

A Titanic day out!
11th November 2021
To celebrate pupils’ learning and to close our World Around Us topic of ‘The Titanic’, Primary 7 spent the day in Titanic Quarter, Belfast! Here we toured the wonderful Titanic Exhibition, walked the original Titanic Slipways and went on board the Titanic’s sister ship- the SS Nomadic.
It was a wonderful day for everyone involved and great to be back on school trips again after a long two years; see images from our day, below!
Sink or Float?

As part of our WAU/ STEAM learning, primary 7 explored the question; ‘ What makes something sink?’. We discussed our predictions, how to test this fairly and we then conducted our experiment. Have a look at some images of this experience below!

We are currently taking part in the ‘Irelands future is Mine’ project on Minecraft and in this week’s task, pupils used Minecraft to explore people in life who got in to ‘Good Trouble’- getting in trouble for just causes!

Dancing the day away!

Primary Seven have been having great fun in their PE this week, by following a series of dance routines.
Following the steps of 'Muinteoir Emer', Primary 7 developed movs to 'the Minion dance', as well as a Traditional African dance.
We are looking forward to developing some more routines next week!

Ireland’s future is MINE

There is much excitement within Primary 7 today we begin a series of workshops based on Minecraft Education. Today we watched episode 1 of ‘Ireland’s future is Mine’ as well as attempt the Minecraft challenge set in the episode. After completing all episodes in 6 weeks time, we will then enter an All- Ireland Minecraft competition, with many prizes up for grabs! Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks!

Problem-Solving with Izak 9!
27th September 2021
Today in our Problem-Solving and investigations task, Primary 7 used the Izak 9 blocks to problem solve, using the trial and improvement strategy.
In their first task, they had to make three rows of three-digit numbers that would altogether total to 900. In the secod task, the 'Garden Centre' challenge required P7 to make rows of numbers to equal 15, but surrounding a garden block and using each digit only once. Check out some of our photos below!
The events of the Titanic- Who was to blame?

As part of Primary 7’s World Around Us learning about the Titanic, alongside their Writing focus of discursive texts, they have been asking the question: who was to blame for the Titanic’s demise?
Primary 7 have explored this though a range of discussion opportunities and by creating balanced arguments on whether the iceberg, captain, crew members, designers or engineers can be blamed. See below for some images of our learning!
Getting creative with Adobe Spark

Recently in ICT, Primary 7 have been getting to grips with with Adobe Spark software, which allows them to design and edit posters and information bases, using a range of tools.

Enjoying our first week back
