Children's Work

Congratulations to Miss Vaughan and the school’s Eco Committee for their sterling efforts in obtaining, for the second time, the prestigious Eco Schools ‘Green Flag’ for St. Colmcille’s Primary School. This award reflects the work that Miss Vaughan, Mrs O’Dowd and the children that make up the Eco Committee, have carried out to make sure St. Colmcille’s is continuing to sustain school improvement in all areas.

Miss Kerr, Mrs Mussen and Mrs Oakes took the Gaelic squad to Carryduff to take part in the County Blitz today. The girls were magnificent throughout winning their way through to the semi finals were they narrowly lost to eventual winners St. Ita's, Belfast.

Well done to Orlaith for fundraising for the Little Princess Trust. Orlaith got 22ins cut off her hair and raised £1200. Both will be donated to help the work of this brilliant charity.

Congratulations to Emily as she took part in the Northern Ireland ITF open regional championships in Aurora Leisure Centre in Bangor on Sunday 14th April. This was her first ever competition for Tae-kwon-do. She brought home two gold medals winning first place in sparring and first place in special technique

Well done to Beth for taking part in the Newry, Mourne and Down District Environmental Youth Speak competition. Beth worked really hard on her speech and delivered a very insightful speech regarding eco awareness and how we can help protect the environment. Beth is pictured receiving her certificate of commendation from Mr Mark Murnin, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Sports Direct, Downpatrick, for sponsoring some footballs and water for the upcoming staff football match in aid of Trocáire. Pictured holding the footballs and water are some of the children from Miss Kerr's P2 class.

Miss Vaughan, Miss O’Hare and Mrs Oakes accompanied some members of the Eco Committee to a local Tree Planting event today. This event had been organised by Rachel Wilson and the Eco Club at Down High, who had been working with the Newry, Mourne and Down District council to create a new community woodland at Dunleath playing fields.

Well done to the P4 children for completing their IFA +Sport, Move and Learn Project. They are pictured proudly receiving their certificates from IFA coach Heather Kerr

Well done to the boys and girls for supporting our 'Green and Purple' day. We managed to raise £212.00 which the school council team will add to their Trocáire fundraising total.

School council members made and delivered Trocáire boxes to every class today for the start of our Lenten campaign. This year we will have a 1p and 2p challenge and are asking the children to bring in these sometimes, unwanted coins from home. The class that collects the largest amount of coins will win a packet of sweets each (P1-P3) or a homework pass (P4-P7).

Huge congratulations to Hollie, Grace, Cora and Shannon for their efforts in the recently held St. Anthony's Irish Dancing Feis in Craigavon. The girls are proudly displaying their cups and medals - lots of firsts as well!!.

Well done to the two luckiest pupils in our school today! Alexis won the PTA chocolate hamper and Erin correctly guessed the number of sweets in the jar. Incidentally, there were 306 sweets in the jar! I wonder how close you were? Huge thanks to the PTA for organising these draws and for all of the work that they put into the school disco.

Miss Li visited the P5 and P6 classes to teach the children about Chinese culture and the Mandarin language. This is the start of a two-year programme between De La Salle High School and ourselves. The children really enjoyed their lesson and are already looking forward to next week.

The victorious Downpatrick Ladies Football Team visited school today to talk to the children during assembly about their recent successes, the importance of keeping fit and that by being part of teams is vital for friendships throughout life. The children had an opportunity to ask lots of questions regarding football, health and exercising. In the photograph we have some of Mr Clifford's Primary 7 girls who are sports mad! Huge thanks to Michelle, Kyla, Catherine, Kerry, Orla and Roisin for speaking to the children and allowing them to hold the cups!
